DJI, the paramount company of all drone companies, has announced their latest model in the Phantom lineup. Aptly named Phantom 4, DJI has added a suite of advanced features making it smarter than your typical drone. The new Phantom 4 also boasts an aesthetic makeover leaving the speed demon stripes behind.
Obstacle avoidance has been a trendy feature among newer consumer drones. DJI’s new Phantom 4 has just that with the addition of two front-facing cameras. The two cameras will track objects up to 15 meters telling the Phantom 4 to avoid them and stay on the same trajectory or hover if it can’t determine a new route.
Speaking of cameras, DJI has kept things rather similar to last year’s versions. There’s a new gimbal and camera attached directly to the frame keeping bringing it closer to the drone’s center of gravity. The camera will record 4K and keep the props out of the frame.
Doing an activity that doesn’t spare your hands for flying? No problem, DJI has granted their Phantom 4 with ActiveTrack or the ability to track objects. Simply tap on a subject you want to track within the DJI Go app (the app that live streams the drone footage to your phone), and Phantom 4 will follow it keeping it in the camera shot all while avoiding objects. Isn’t that handy?
While other aspects of drone flight seem to be advancing pretty quickly, battery life is still far behind in the race. But it is catching up. DJI has improved their battery life slightly, so the Phantom 4 can fly up to 28 minutes at a time. Sounds good, but you’ll need to swap out your current collection of batteries for the new one. The previous ones aren’t compatible with Phantom 4.
Phantom 4 is amazingly fast. If you’re feeling the need for speed, Phantom 4 cranks up to a top speed of 45 mph. Obstacle avoidance and all, just make sure there’s plenty of airspace for your drone to cover that much distance in a small amount of time.
DJI has Phantom 4 up for grabs on their website and apple.com. It’s $1400, but if that’s too much, we’ve got a whole list of similar models for the budget pilot. Phantom 4 will be flying into all other retailers on March 28.
